On October 21st, 2025, a new space for transfer students was unveiled on the Queens College campus. The Transfer Hub, located in the lower level of Frese Hall, features a lounge/flex space, mentoring space and a student success conference room.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Queens College President Frank H. Wu highlighted the fact that transfer students account for half of the college’s current enrollment, many of whom come in from neighboring CUNY community colleges such as Queensborough and LaGuardia Community Colleges.
“It’s a space where students will find both guidance and community as they navigate their academic journeys,” said CUNY Associate Dean for Transfer and Articulation, Samar El Hitti. “This hub will support them in making informed decisions, connecting with advisors and peer mentors, and staying on the track towards graduation.”
The Transfer Hub is the go-to location on campus for transfer students seeking mentorship, guidance, a space to study, or just a spot to decompress. Students have full access to computers, charging stations, and desk space in the lounge.
The Hub is fairly new, and people are still discovering it. The rooms are on the quieter side and are rarely crowded for now. While the lounge space offers an independent setting for students, the mentoring space is intended to offer support and assistance from peer mentors, faculty, and advisors.
Oftentimes, transfer students can feel lost, physically and socially, when they arrive on a new campus. Navigating to the right departments and accessing the resources they need can also be challenging for new students who don’t know where to start. The Transfer Hub seeks to address these challenges.
“The vision of this place is to be not only like a social hub for transfer students, but a place where if you’re a transfer student and you have no idea what’s going on and you’re like, ‘I need this and this and that paperwork, where am I supposed to go?’ We can go down the list with you and be like okay for this, you go to Admissions, and for this, you can go to the Registrar, and for this, you go to such and such,” said Administrative Coordinator for the Hub, Joanna Podias.
The Hub aims to foster a community amongst transfers as well as offering academic support. Since its opening, the Hub has hosted a number of events, including a Thanksgiving Feast, a Winter Movie Night, and a LinkedIn Workshop.
The Hub has continued to expand its reach by collaborating with the S-STEM Program at Queens College, hosting multiple events tailored for transfer students majoring in Computer Science.
On February 25th, in conjunction with the S-STEM Program and the Center for Career Engagements and Internships, the Hub will host an Internship 101 event to help students learn how to find and apply for internship opportunities. Although the Transfer Hub is primarily intended for transfer students, any student is welcome to use the spaces and attend their events.
The Transfer Hub’s presence at Queens College is designed to foster success among transfer students. According to research conducted by David Fischer at the Center for an Urban Future, “Among the students who do successfully transfer from CUNY community colleges to senior colleges in recent years, fewer than half complete their bachelor’s degrees within three years of enrolling in their destination college.”
Queens College has introduced the Transfer Hub in hopes of changing this statistic for the better by steering transfer students on the right path towards completing their degree.
