New York: A City United Through Basketball

4 mins read

After the New York Knicks’ championship win on June 13, 2026, the energy in New York City (NYC) has been through the roof. Months later, fans are still riding the wave of excitement.

After a 53-year drought, the Knicks secured a championship with an unforgettable run. The win is cemented in city history, and it means just as much to the fans as it does to the players. According to a nationwide survey by Play Baseball, New Yorkers are among the most passionate sports fans across the United States.

Jay-Z once rapped about making the Yankee hat more famous than the team itself could, but now Jalen Brunson and the championship team have made Knicks hats even more popular than the coveted Yankee caps. If you were to walk around NYC on any given day, you are bound to see a variety of Knicks championship merchandise and an increase in people wearing Knicks gear as a fashion statement. Wearing Knicks gear has become a first choice for many New Yorkers, including celebrities such as Mariska Hargitay, Timothée Chalamet and Spike Lee.

“Knicks in 5” became the official greeting call of the city, with fans often gesturing Brunson’s signature three-pointer celebration in place of a wave. The Knicks theme song, “Go New York Go New York Go,” could be heard blasting from speakers at any venue, even for a different sports-related event.

The Knicks have even become popular among kids not old enough to fully understand how basketball works. They just know that wearing a blue-and-orange No. 11 jersey is cool, so they do it. The kids that grew up yelling “Kobe” when they tossed anything like a basketball are now watching the younger generation kids yell “Brunson” when they do the same.

The Knicks’ championship parade, held on June 18, 2026, felt like a national holiday for New York, with an estimated attendance of 2 million people. Many called out of work, and some businesses decided to shut down for the day since they knew that the majority of their employees would call out sick to attend the parade.

NYC was filled with commotion, and New Yorkers were more united than ever before. They were helping each other climb atop New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) garbage trucks, jump barricades and hoist each other onto the side of buildings to get a better view. Even as DSNY trucks began to collapse under the weight of people jumping on top of them, everyone was willing to offer a helping hand.

Winning the championship brought so much for New York, the players should be proud to represent the city with a new upgrade to their 2026 – 27 season jerseys — the gold outline and patches. This win shows how sports could unify a major fan base, a whole city and even an entire state. The fans are ecstatic to see what the new season brings and hope to witness back-to-back chips.
