MEDLIFE is hosting a blood drive with the New York Blood Center on Monday April 30 in the Patio Room of the Dining Hall.

MEDLIFE is an organization that works to provide services to areas and communities that do not have access to healthcare, education, and development. We work to provide these resources to people that cannot otherwise obtain it. This is done through mission trips, where we travel countries in Latin America, and provide necessities and resources to help struggling communities.

Yanal Maher, reflected on the experience of bringing a blood drive to QC. “It’s an honor to team up with New York Blood Center and host blood drives twice a semester. MEDLIFE works tirelessly to provide aid for those in dire need, both domestically and abroad. The blood drives are a great way for us to accomplish our mission. Each blood drive has the chance to save a few hundred lives, which is why our club continues to host such events with the blood center.”

Since 2013, MEDLIFE has been organizing blood drives with the New York Blood Center. From then, the organization has pushed the lifesaving cause on campus with each blood drive doing better than the last.

Madeline Lo, Account Manager for the New York Blood Center commented on MEDLIFE’s efforts to bring blood drives to campus, stating, “MEDLIFE has been running blood drives with us for quite some time now. Their hard work and efforts really show in the turnout of each blood drive which hundreds of students come out to donate. Only 1% of eligible New Yorkers donate, so it is really amazing to see the people of Queens College.”

As MEDLIFE approaches its second drive of the Spring 2018 semester, they encourage students to come out and show support as they strive to reach their 2000 donor. Each donation can save up to three lives, and aid someone in need.

Fernando D, a sophomore majoring in ____ asks students to consider donating blood. “I strongly encourage people to at least try donating. Do not wait for a loved one to need it for you to make the move. I don’t have a lot of money, but giving blood is something that doesn’t cost anything and the body regenerates the blood back,” D. said.

The blood donated will be distributed to hospitals in need by the New York Blood Center.

MEDLIFE asks all students to participate in their blood drive on Monday, April 30, from 9 AM-8:30 PM. Students must bring an ID with their signature or their donor cards, weigh at least 110 pounds, and must eat well (low fat) and drink fluids upon attending.

As the club states, “This life saving gift is completely free, cookies and juice will be provided, and you will be able to find out what your blood type is! The 2000th donor will win a gift basket filled with goodies!”
