Women’s basketball remain focused as playoffs approach

The Queens College women’s basketball team has maintained a 13-game winning streak, boosting the team’s season record from 8-3 to 21-3. Coach Beth Naumovski believes a key factor in their continued success is improved communication from earlier in the season, leading to better team chemistry on and off the court. “I think team chemistry is very important, especially for basketball because you always want to be on the same page as your teammates because it makes it a lot easier to make the right pass or the right reads knowing where your teammate is going to be,” junior guard Merrick Rowland said. Another large component to their success is the…

    Knights close out historical season

The women’s basketball team made history with a 76-64 victory over Holy Family in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II East Regional on March 13 at Bentley University. It was the team’s third appearance and first victory in the NCAA tournament. Junior Madison Rowland scored 31 points, including 20 in the first two quarters, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Head coach Elizabeth Naumovski won 20 games for the third consecutive season. She felt proud of her team’s performance. “We knew we could do it, but knowing you can do something and actually doing it are two different things. It’s easy to get overwhelmed in that…

A fairytale ending for two players

Kristin Korzevinski and Mackenzie Rowland achieved a milestone last month—scoring 1,000 career points for the women’s basketball team. Korzevinski and Rowland, both seniors, are the 11th and 12th players to get this honor, respectively. Korzevinski got it at the Jan. 27 match against St. Thomas Aquinas, which the team won 67-58. Meanwhile, Rowland scored 1,000 points three days later in the match against Mercy College. But the road to the achievement was not easy. Rowland played just six games in the 2012-13 season because of a severe injury. Korzevinski also suffered an injury during her sophomore year, missing half of the season. Rowland said she felt proud and surprised with…

Knights eager to defend championship in upcoming season

Queens College women’s basketball team wants to capture back-to-back Eastern Conference Championships. In a preseason poll, the Knights were predicted to win the conference championship. They received nine of the 11 votes and topped the list with 117 total points. Head coach Elizabeth Naumovski enters her fifth season managing a team which won 20 games over the past two consecutive seasons. As a result, she is third in the all-time QC women’s basketball wins list with 54 victories. Yet Naumovski does not think the preseason poll changed the team’s mentality for the upcoming season. “The expectations are the same. We know we can contend for a conference championship again and…

Reasons to love Madison Rowland, the sophomore sensation

The 1000th point club is composed of the most remarkably talented and hard-working athletes in their respectable sport. This season Queens College women’s basketball team added one athlete who continues to turn heads in her career as a Lady Knight—Madison Rowland. On Feb. 18, Rowland scored her 1000th point as a sophomore. It is a milestone which takes most athletes a full four-year career to complete. She joins the list of amazing QC athletes such as Amanda Bartlett and Shonda Holder. “I was so ecstatic after the game. To get 1,000 points is an amazing accomplishment and I am so excited about it,” Rowland said. Rowland is currently at 1,025…
