On Mar. 26th, the City University of New York (CUNY) released a platform-wide announcement via Brightspace that students’ college-based email accounts would be transitioned to a new CUNY email starting the day of return from their 2026 Spring break (Monday, April 13).
According to CUNY Sharepoint, “The new CUNY email account and mailbox will be the student’s CUNY Login username (firstname.lastname##@login.cuny.edu), and it will receive all messages sent to any of the student’s college or CUNY email addresses.”
Additionally, students have been designated to one or more new college email addresses as selected by their college. Amidst the transition, students will be able to access their old college-supported email accounts, if needed. To notify senders about the new email address, “email rules” have been facilitated to instantly forward emails to the student’s new CUNY email account and alert senders of the change. Students’ preferred email addresses, as listed on CUNYFirst, will change to their new college-branded email address.
The replacement of Queens College’s well-known email domain, “qmail.cuny.edu” has been changed to “stu-mail.qc.cuny.edu.” Consequently, “login.cuny.edu” as used for Brightspace notifications and other CUNY emails will be altered to “cuny.edu.” Both emails will retain students’ first and last names as well as the last two digits of their EMPLID number as the local-part.
On April 1st, the Office of Information Technology Services at QC issued an email regarding the shift: “Queens College will transition all active student email accounts to a different configuration as part of a CUNY-wide initiative to simplify email management. This change will enable seamless sharing and collaboration across all Microsoft 365 products and strengthen protections against cyberattacks.”
The email reiterated the combination of both “qmail.cuny.edu” and “login.cuny.edu” accounts into one mailbox; contrasting the former arrangement of primary QC emails being sent to qmail.cuny.edu accounts and Brightspace and other CUNY emails being sent to login.cuny.edu accounts.
Students will continue to use Microsoft’s Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) — logging into their new CUNY email account. Furthermore, students must sign into MFA when accessing their new student emails as well as Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, OneDrive and Teams.
The Office of Information Technology urges students to continue checking their Queens College email for updates or contact support@qc.cuny.edu for assistance.
