Despite their recent accomplishment in the regional rankings, the Queens College men’s soccer team missed their chance to clinch an ECC playoff position with their last two results and currently find themselves pressured to win the rest of their conference matches.
The Knights, now ranked fourth in the ECC with a record of 3-2-2, found themselves ranked 10th in the region after a 3-1 victory over Stonehill; this accomplishment was short lived.
On October 6th, the men’s game against University of the District of Columbia resulted in a 3-3 draw. For the third time this season, the men competed in double-overtime, but failed to secure a win that would have put them in a better position in the conference. The subsequent conference game against Roberts Wesleyan ended in a disappointing, 3-2 loss for the Knights.
The results of these games are not detrimental, however, two wins would have secured a playoff spot and placed the men in a better position for their next conference games against LIU Post (6-1) and NYIT (3-2-1).
“We had a solid season for the most part,” said head coach Carl Christian. “Now, we need to regroup, refocus and finish strong.”
These next games will prove challenging. LIU Post tops the rankings in the ECC, region and country. NYIT, despite their lower ranking, was the only team to beat the top-ranked Post. Now, the pressure is on for the men to secure the next two wins order to get their chance at a playoff position.
“Post, being our rival, is always an exciting game,” said junior defender Scott Cain, “but now that we are nearing the end of our season, the game will be crucial. We will need as much support from our fans as possible. Post and NYIT are good teams, but so are we!”
