On July 29th, Marvin Scott, the New York National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Awards Chair, announced that CUNY TV has been recognized with 21 nominations for the 68th Annual New York Emmy Awards.

CUNY TV has been nominated for 12 different programs, segments, and titles across 17 categories such as Diversity/Equity/Inclusion Sports, Interview/Discussion (Long Form), Education/Schools (Short Form Content), Military – News & Content (Spanish Language), Politics/Government (Long Form), and Societal Concerns (Long Form).

Among the nominees are acclaimed programs like “CUNY Laureates” and “Nueva York” which have won Emmy awards in the past and other programs such as “Asian American Life,” “Black America,” and “Café Con Felo.”

In a statement given to The Knight News by CUNY TV Interim Executive Director Chiqui Cartagena, she stated:

“CUNY TV offers original, independent programming that reflects the diversity and complexity of the city. With a strong commitment to covering better than anyone else the underserved and underrepresented communities – including Black, Asian and Hispanic audiences. I think the fact that our shows get nominated every year, shows that we are doing something right. We have a team of 120 employees who work in front of the cameras and behind them to produce 26 shows every month and so we are fortunate to be recognized by The New York Chapter of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences each year with over 200 nominations under our belt.”

CUNY TV programs and titles that are nominated include “LATiNAS” for the Magazine Program (Series) category, “Asian American Life: Purple Reign” for the Lifestyle (Short Form) category, and “Nueva York: Alexis Rodriguez, Tico Torres” for the Arts/Entertainment (Short Form) category.

Two examples of CUNY TV programs that are both vying for the same award in the Education/Schools (Short Form Content) category are “CUNY Laureates” and “Greater Good”. The “CUNY Laureates” segment is focused on Denny Moore’s fascination with cultures and customs of tribes who live in the Amazon Rainforest and the “Greater Good” episode shows how children are tackling the ongoing environmental crisis by curbing their use of plastic and styrofoam materials in the cafeteria.

“We are excited that CUNY TV has once again been recognized for its impeccable work,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez in an August 7th CUNY press release.

According to CUNY TV Interim Executive Director Chiqui Cartagena, she claims that CUNY TV has broadened their network of programs and titles to serve the curiosities of the CUNY community better.

“CUNY TV has extensively expanded its coverage of the CUNY community since I got here three years ago. While some of our shows from our colleges like “EdCast” (Hostos), “City Cinematheque” (City College), and “Italics” (Queens College) have been running for decades, in the last three years we have expanded our CUNY-centric shows to include the first student-hosted show, “CUNY Uncut”. We have launched “Sustainability Matters,” the Chancellor’s interview show, “Café Con Felo,” and a new show featuring CUNY Alumnus that has won the highest accolades in their field, “CUNY Laureates,” said Chiqui Cartagena.

From its inception in 1985, CUNY TV has served as a 24-hour educational platform that broadcasts news, social issues, true stories, and entertainment for the community, garnering 44 NY Emmy awards in the process.

The New York Emmy Sports Award Ceremony, which took place on Sept. 16th as the first of three ceremonies, saw CUNY TV take home a win for “Shades of U.S: Major League Baseball Officially Recognizes The Negro Leagues,” in the Diversity/Equity/Inclusion Sports category. The two remaining events, the Creative Arts Ceremony and the New York Emmy Awards Gala, will both be held on Oct. 11th. You can watch each ceremony live on the NY Emmy Awards website or on the NY NATAS Facebook page.
