A Night Around the World: Multicultural Night Unites Queens College Students

4 mins read

On Mar. 26th, the Queens College Student Association (SA) held its second Multicultural Night (MCN) of the 2025-2026 school year.

With almost 400 attendees, the event stood out as one of SA’s most successful events this year despite disruptions caused by the closure of the Student Union building

The event followed the first MCN held on November 20th, 2025 which drew over 300 students from across all City University of New York (CUNY) colleges. Similar to the fall semester, tickets to the event were free of charge.

Attendees were served a variety of cultural foods and goodie bags, which took the shape of a suitcase containing globe-themed trinkets and candies. They also watched their peers perform traditional dances and songs. In addition, the event allowed students to dance on the open dance floor to music that represented a wide range of cultures.

SA President Shawn Rajkumar worked with his administration to organize the event. “Multicultural Night is an event that was designed to bring clubs together and have them showcase their cultures. The first Multicultural Night was held in November 2025. SA plans on continuing to host MCN at least once a year going forward.”

In a previous interview held by The Knight News regarding SA’s administration for the 2025-2026 school year Rajkumar shared, “Upon my election, a big goal of my administration is to work more with the clubs because the Student Association hasn’t had a really direct connection with the clubs on campus.”

For the most recent MCN, over twenty-five clubs requested to participate in tabling or performing. Eight QC clubs performed which ranged from singing to dancing in duets, trios and large groups.

Among the performances, four were done by groups of students outside of QC. Rajkumar shared, “Performances from CUNY schools included Philippine American Organization (PAO) from The City College of New York, City Chaahat from The City College of New York, SJU RAAZ from St. John’s University, and Supreme Steppers from Brooklyn College.”

“Performances from Queens College included the Ikaros QC Hellenic Orthodox Club, K-POP at QC, the QC Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA), QC Together Representing an Organization for Philippine Americans (TROPA), QC South Asian Student Association (SASA), QC Indian Student Association (ISA), QC Guyanese Student Association (GSA) and QC Bhangra,” said Rajkumar.

President of QC Bhangra Tanha Rani performed with her club using cultural props to highlight the traditional elements of Bhangra. “My team and I had an amazing time at the event and loved performing for everyone. Last semester at Multicultural Night was our very first performance and getting to share and celebrate our culture with everyone again was an honor,” Rani shared after the event.

She added, “I truly commend my peers for organizing such an inclusive and engaging event not once, but twice. Getting to experience everyone light up seeing their flag, hearing their music, eating their food, and truly being seen was so cool!”

Overall, the event allowed students to embrace the diversity at QC with national flags lining the walls, which were later used in celebration on the dance floor during the event. As well as performances and cuisine, which heightened the cultural aspects of the event even more.

The strong turnout and growing participation suggest that Multicultural Night is becoming a defining event for celebrating community and cultural expression at QC.
